THE NEON DEAD is worth a look.

When it comes to low budget movies made by people who actually care about film I am very forgiving.  Low budget films obviously have more challenges and obstacles to overcome to get made and shown in the public eye.  I am a big believer in art through adversity.  The challenge and limitations from the lack of money and resources can inspire wonderful results.  THE EVIL DEAD is a terrific example of this.  I am always looking to low budget films for inspiration since I myself am part of the world of no budget film making.  I want more people to know about the good ones and get motivated to support these films and maybe make their own.  I am looking for horror movies that are not homages or at least influenced by THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.  I like that film but it has been too big of an influence on many horror films in the last 20 years or so.  There are so many horror film makers that seek to out shock that classic movie through the on screen suffering of characters that a new genre of horror was created.  Torture Porn.  You can't count the number of horror movies whose plot summary is about a group of young teens and twenty-somethings who go out to the middle of nowhere and become the victims of a crazed cannibal inbred family of yahoos.  I bet there are more movies about crazed cannibal inbred families than there are about Dracula and Frankenstein combined.  People looking for new ideas to be inspired by to create new kinds of horror need to limit their intake of such films unless they just like that kind of film.  I myself like the WRONG TURN movies for some reason.  But if you are looking for something new and different I would recommend THE NEON DEAD.

When Allison discovers a violent ghost in her house she calls Desmond and Jake, an amateur paranormal exterminating duo, to find out what is going on in her house.  The investigation leads our two ghost fighters to uncover the bigger problem of an interstellar demon trying to get to earth and destroy all life as we know it.

What I love is THE NEON DEAD's ambition.  This a small movie with big special effects designed to make this movie look and feel different than so many other horror films.  THE NEON DEAD has zombies but these zombies glowy grey eyes and are painted in grey that look like they would glow in black light.  The zombies actually side with our heroes and fight these robed undead wizards (At least I think they were the wizards.) that look like the Blind Dead but with glowing red eyes.  The zombies are used differently.  They aren't just stumbling around looking for brains or living flesh to eat.  That is part of the charm of THE NEON DEAD.  The creators are using old horror elements and doing something more with them.  I love the interstellar demon-thingy that is brought to life through the magic of stop-motion.  They don't just show it once or twice either.  There is a whole sword fight with it that is rather spectacular for a film like this.

The film has a lot of color to it.  Color is used to emphasize the supernatural world clouding the normal world we live in.  I like bold color in my fantasy horror films.  Films like this are eye candy and candy should be colorful.  Horror doesn't have to always be bland and ugly.  Bland tends to be forgettable and THE NEON DEAD is not forgettable.

At 120 minutes run time I will say that THE NEON DEAD is way too long.  There is a lot of story here that really could be trimmed down.  The script itself needed to be tighter focusing on the relationship between the main trio of Allison, Desmond and Jake.  Their newly formed friendship needs to be the foundation of the film.  They do try to do this but because there is so much going on with the details of the story that the characters never fully develop believable growth.  The film has too much talk.  Too much explanation.  NEON has a lot going on and the film feels the need to explain it all.  Its not necessary.  The result is that the film is kind of a slog to get through.  It is very unfortunate and will turn many people off from the film.  There is a lot of talent behind and in front of the camera that people should take notice of.

The other problem with the film is its lack of imagination with it's choice of camera angles.  Of course this is because of the limit of budget but even the dialogue scenes are mostly shot reverse shot in close ups and mediums with little change.  This confines the visual scope of the film adding to the film feeling slow even though there are a lot of different locations.  However, there are some good camera movement at times too especially with the sword fight that has the camera following smoothly around the actors capturing the excitement of the fight in every detail.

I recommend THE NEON DEAD.  You can learn what to and not to do with your next film.  You can tell that the makers love the horror genre and want to make something that stands out from the rest.  Be sure to stay to the very end for the stinger for the potential sequel.  I hope there is one.  I like what they are trying to do even if it isn't fully successful.  I want to know who that mummy guy was.  Don't know who I am talking about?  You are just going to have to see the film for yourself.

STAGE FRIGHT: THE WEB SERIES!

Looking for something different and scary this Halloween?  How about watching a little web series I was involved in.  STAGE FRIGHT from American Wasteland Entertainment tells the story of a young couple who have been given a theater for their wedding.  Its old, its creepy and of course its freaking haunted.  The couple want to reopen it but this theater has plans of its own.

This was one of my first projects and I learned a lot.  It was fun and I made some new friends and got to do a little acting.  I play a ghost piano player with half my face burned up.  I look like Two-Face from Batman.  Mike Strain did my make up.  He did the effects for YOU'RE NEXT and THE AGGRESSION SCALE which are two great movies.  He is a master of the craft and it was a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to work with him.  I learned a lot from that guy.

The series subverts a few of the cliches that are found in the modern horror genre.  The shower scene is a perfect example of that.  I won't spoil it.  Just watch it.  Jason Braiser and Brittney Greer put a tremendous effort creating a great little show with very little money.  They are a great example of how anything is possible if you work hard at it.  They pulled off a professional looking and creepy story.  Click the links below and thank you for supporting independent film.

RagnBone's WHITE ZOMBIE (Screener)

RagNBones has taken on the ambitious task of re-imagining the Bela Lugoisi film WHITE ZOMBIE.  The original WHITE ZOMBIE is one of those films I have seen a hundred times yet I remember almost nothing about it but the fact that Bela Lugoisi is in it.  It is one of those films I have playing on the t.v. in the background every Halloween morning but I never just sit down and watch it.  I don't know why I do that.  RagnBone Productions was nice enough to send me a screener of their version of WHITE ZOMBIE.  Thank you so very much!

Madeline White and her fiance, Neil Bellamy plan to marry each other on a plantation on ZOMBIE ISLAND!  Actually it is not called 'ZOMBIE ISLAND' but that is what I call it because there are zombies everywhere.  The plantation owner, Gillies Beaumonde has convinced Madeline to come to his plantation for the wedding to try and convince her to fall in love with him.  Beaumonde will do anything to win her over including associating himself with Severin the local evil voodoo practitioner who everyone strongly dislikes because he is weird.....and I guess because he is evil.  With Severin's aid, Beaumonde poisons Madeline on her wedding day causing her to seemingly die.  With the powers of voodoo she is brought back from the dead becoming the prize of three men competing to have her for themselves.  While Beaumonde was planning on screwing Neil out of a bride, Severin was planning on screwing Beaumonde out of a bride and all his wealth.

Scarlett Shepard is absolutely iconic as Madeline White.  She is beautiful with a gleam of grace that summons images of classic Hollywood starlets from the golden age of cinema.  Her costuming is perfect.  The bridal dress she wears is elaborate and short making it almost resemble a ballerina's silver and white tutu worn for the grand production of SWAN LAKE.  That is rather appropriate since two of the antagonists in this movie have her dance around (Figuratively speaking, of course.) for their amusement.

The movie moves about from the three main characters, Neil, Beaumonde and Severin as they each do what they have to to get what they want.  Even though Severin is the main baddy with the coolest look and spookiest presence I like Beaumonde's character the most.  He has the biggest character transition in the film.  I single him out as the main character in the film.  A great deal of the film is focused on his plight to win the girl no matter the cost.  He learns the hard way that women are not objects and voodoo is not to be messed with unless of course its that hilarious WEEKEND AT BERNIES II kind of voodoo.

RagnBone's WHITE ZOMBIE presents a world bathed in night with zombies casually moving about aimlessly in the island cemeteries.  Voodoo is a way of life here and zombies are a common sight.  This world is brought to life through higher production levels and aided by some creative camera work.  The costumes look authentic especially when they are worn by great actors who come to life in them.  I particularly like Tom Smith as Dr. Bruner.  He looks  a lot different from that crazy cannibalistic yahoo dad he played in THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS.  What a transformation!  That is the complement of a great actor.  In WHITE ZOMBIE he looks like he is from that time period.

Even though this is a low budget film it doesn't feel like it.  Like all low budget films there are things to forgive but if you like independent film and want to see what great things other film makers are doing out there who care about the craft and want to tell a good story then I suggest you watch RagnBone's WHITE ZOMBIE.

THE HOUSE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS

THE HOUSE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS combines the popular 'Found Footage' genre with the 'TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE' genre of horror.  Our heroes/victims are three punks who plan on robbing a house in town and film the entire thing for kicks.  Unfortunately for them they chose the worst possible house to perform their crime.

Two of the punks are brothers.  Nathan (Played by Alec Drake) is the oldest.  The younger brother is Ray (Eric Sopko) who is also the guy filming their not very nice deeds.  Liz (Amanda Baker) is the girlfriend of Nathan.  Nathan is an extremely sadistic character taking obvious pleasure verbally abusing Liz.  He leads his girlfriend and brother along for the ride with his overbearing dynamic but sick personality.  Ray and Liz are not necessarily bad people. They just seem to be powerless to deny the frightful and eccentric older brother.  If Nathan was a nice guy then these characters would probably be getting jobs and bettering themselves instead of milling about and planning bad things to do to people.  Nathan is a very compelling and important character.  He is unique in this genre portraying someone who comes across as a very young and unsophisticated Joker.  He is definitely not your typical teenager in distress type.  He is a 'wild card' which makes you want to see how he handles the horrors of what awaits him in the house on the wrong side of the tracks.

The film uses the 'Found Footage' gimmick in a unique way.  Different perspectives of the characters are explored based on who is holding the camera.  The film starts off about a group of punks robbing a home then becomes about a family of psychos having fun with their new victims that have surprised them on one dark cold winter night.  When the true horrors begin to happen we see the burglars become the victims.  They must try and survive the night and find escape.  Meanwhile the family of crazies are having fun with the camera filming their exploits as they torture and kill their captives.  The camera reveals the house of horrors from top to bottom exposing what lurks inside the mild mannered home.  Watch out for Billy, the gorilla mask wearing son of the family.  He is the iconic monster of the film.  There is something so unnerving about a guy killing in a gorilla mask.  Seriously.....The mask is freakin ferocious.  He has an great moment with Liz who tries to befriend him as a way to survive but fails  miserably as she freaks the moment she sees Billy's face.  Amanda Baker steals the show a bit towards the end with that scene and her escape at the end with her apology when she gets back the camera.  Great job.

This is a low budget film so there are things to forgive.  That is just how things go when you don't have millions of dollars to do what you want to do.  I would have liked to see the Nathan character go head to head with the crazy cannibal family a bit more.  That would have provided a bit more conflict instead of just showing people tied to chairs getting cut on.  RagNBone Productions has made a good little movie that has some interesting and colorful characters accompanied by a great soundtrack by Bleeding Soul.  See it for yourself and support independent film makers.  RagNBone Productions could be the next big name in horror.  You read it here first.

COME TO THE WHITE ZOMBIE PREMIER!!!

How cool is this?  The fine talented crew of RagNbone Productions are having their premier for WHITE ZOMBIE on July 12, 2014 at the Twin City Opera house in McConnelsville, Ohio.  Apparently the opera house is haunted so when you go there have fun but just don't get ghost on you.  Trust me.  You do not want to bring back some unwelcome guests into your home.  Below is the link to their promo on THE YOUTUBE with more information.  Premiers for horror movies at real haunted locations are the best.  I worked on the web series SHADOW BOUND and we had the premier at the Pythian Castle where we shot some of the scenes for the show.  It is a thrilling and unique experience to say the least.  You do not want to miss out on that kind of opportunity.  Check out RagNbones other feature THE HOUSE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS.  You can find a link to the DVD below.  Be sure you tell your friends and share it on THE FACEBOOK.  Thanks.

I figure I would follow up the trailer for REZISTANCE with a post about the film's new Indiegogo campaign.  If you watched the trailer and enjoyed what you saw please help by contributing to Black T Productions' crowdfund project.  You should at least watch the short video with director Mark Colombo talking about his campaign.  I thought it was rather funny and creative.  As always the link below will take you to their Indiegogo page.  Thanks and please share with your friends and continue to support independent film.

REZISTANCE is coming!!!!

Up and coming filmmaker, Mark Colombo has his first feature film, REZISTANCE premiering this summer.  The 'Z' stands for 'Zombie' which means I have to see it.  Below is the trailer on THE YOUTUBE and their THE FACEBOOK page for the film's production company Black T. Productions.

The trailer looks like REZISTANCE is going to be a fun blood-all-over-the-place zombie opus with some colorful characters and scary situations.  I particularly love the zombie beheading and how real it looked.  There is also a mangled arm too that has to be real.  This is a low budget zombie movie but Mark Colombo is already showing us with this trailer that the limitations of the independent film world isn't going to hamper the quality of his fright flick.  This is a film that has my support and I will be eagerly waiting for it's release in the thankfully near future.  Be sure to check out the trailer below and like their THE FACEBOOK page and share it with your friends to help spread the word and to get further info.  This is going to be a good one.

RagN'Bone's WHITE ZOMBIE trailer!

The cool guys at RagN'Bone Productions asked if I would pass on the word that the trailer for their next film WHITE ZOMBIE is up and ready to be viewed on THE YOUTUBE.  Below is the links to their website and their Youtube page which features the new trailer.  They are taking the gutsy approach and remaking the classic film WHITE ZOMBIE that starred Bela Lugosi.  The trailer shows their ambitious and extremely unique take on the material.  I gotta say that the last image in the trailer left a gruesome image in my brain in a good way.  I am beyond intrigued.  This should be a good one.

GORILLA INTERRUPTED is a different kind of good.

Let me just start off by stating that I am a huge fan the guys over at RedletterMedia.com.  I love their review shows HALF IN THE BAG, BEST OF THE WORST and the extremely insightful/hilarious PLINKETT REVIEWS.  The shows' creators Mike Stoklasa, Jay Bauman, and Rich Evans are three talented and funny individuals that bring something a little different to the Internet with their web series.  They have a bunch of short films on their website and occasionally put out a movie now and then.  I highly recommend FEEDING FRENZY.  They have been gracious enough to release their first movie they made back in the day called GORILLA INTERRUPTED.

GORILLA INTERRUPTED is about Ray Grabowski, a man who is turned into a gorilla by aliens.  With the help of his kind-of-sort-of friends Dex, Sid and Jar Jar Binks the four yahoos stop an alien invasion and fight the Devil for some reason.  It has "shot in the backyard with dad's camera" production values but the film has this strange crude energy that you don't get too often in comedies.   I was reminded of the show THE YOUNG ONES which I was excited to hear them mention on the commentary track. The story is strange and the humor is absurd but there are genuine moments of greatness that hint at the greater things that came afterward.

The real reason why you should get this movie is for the making of documentary and the commentary track with Mike, Jay and Rich.  Both give funny insights into the guys of Redlettermedia and where they came from, how they got together and what struggles and obstacles they encountered when making this movie.  Friendships were tested, stuff was broken and in the end they came out with a film that left them tired and disappointed.  Yet, without GORILLA INTERRUPTED there wouldn't be RedletterMedia.  I am glad that they do show some love for their film by going back and redoing some of the special effects to make them more palatable to the eyes.

I had fun watching all that GORILLA INTERRUPTED had to offer.  Yes, it is not for everyone.  But if you are into making movies then buying this movie will not only encourage you to proceed with media production (In more ways than one!) but you will be helping a smart group of guys continue to make the Internet a funny place to visit.

SUPPORT SHADOW BOUND'S INDIEAGOGO CAMPAIGN!!!

Here is another excellent chance to be a part of something truly special in the cinematic world of horror.  SHADOW BOUND is a black and white silent web series inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.  The story is about a man named Jack Pickman who returns to his home town from the big city to attend his father's funeral who has died under mysterious circumstances.  When he arrives, however, he discovers that his brother has been institutionalized and is no longer the man Jack knew before.   Believing that something more sinister is afoot Jack sets off on his own investigation to discover what happened to both his father and brother and their connection to a strange symbol that seems to be the start of all the strangeness.

This is a horror series that goes in the complete opposite direction of what everybody else is doing out there on the world wide web.  SHADOW BOUND is about story and atmosphere with a silent early 1900's film style.  The goal is to tell a scary story visually without pathetic jump scares and  strewing a bunch of gore and gross stuff about.  It's called class, people.  I am blessed enough to be 1st AD on the project and was allowed to direct the diner scene in the first episode.  Everyone involved in front of and behind the cameras is a remarkable talent.  There is so much work, sacrifice and creativity involved with a large project such as this.  We have done a lot of filming on location too including in the very haunted Pythian Castle which can be seen on t.v.'s HAUNTED COLLECTOR and GHOST LAB.

We are currently filming and we need your help.  So click on the link below and visit our Indiegogo page.  Watch the video and get to know the people behind the creation of SHADOW BOUND.  Nathan Shelton is the writer and star of SHADOW BOUND as well as one of the directors.  He is a true talent.  I cannot stress that enough.  I saw a short sci-fi film he was in a few years back.  It was a really good film but when Nathan was on screen I felt like I was watching BLADE RUNNER for the first time.  His mere presence elevated the look and the feel of the film.  SHADOW BOUND is his creation and with his talent and vision there is no telling how big this series is going to get.   You can easily be a part of it.  Spread the word and donate if you can.  A little bit goes a long way.  All of us on the production team thank you.  Stay in the light, folks.

SUPPORT DRIFTER: LONESOME HIGHWAY INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN!!!

Being a part of making movies and now web series is a dream come true for yours truly.  I am working with a brilliant director and good friend Jason Braiser and my girlfriend Brittney Greer to help bring their new web series DRIFTER: LONESOME HIGHWAY into reality.  This is a sequel to their award winning series DRIFTER: BROKEN ROAD.  The series is in pre-production and we are looking to raise funds to make this the most outstanding dark drama of revenge and adventure in a fragmented dystopian future possible.  Essentially the series is a Western that takes place in the near future where America has been torn apart by a second civil war.

I urge you to please help in anyway you can by going to the links below and finding out more about this series and the production company that are making them AMERICAN WASTELAND.  Just clicking on the links below or sharing with your friends on THE FACEBOOK or on your blogs will be most appreciated.  If you do share with your friends or donate let me know so I can say thank you and if you do have a blog I will follow it as well.

I know this will come off a little biased seeing how I am friends with them both and all but I will say this about Brittney Greer and Jason Braiser.  They are committed to their craft.  Both have acted, produced, directed and written many projects before.  They get results faster than most if not all.  With very little they accomplish more visually than most bigger budgeted web series.  A couple of visionaries is what they are recognizing the popularity with the web series format before most ever even heard of the concept.  If you are looking for a professional production team to help on a media project check them out.  They have worked on films, web series, music videos, commercials and helped others with their projects as well.  Go to their website below and send any questions you may have about their projects or inquire if you are looking to hire someone for your own project.  Together we can bring better stories to life rather than waiting on big studios to give us what we want.  Thanks in advance for all your support.

CHECK OUT RagNBone Productions!!!

Here at Umustbebored I am using my blog-thingy to not only give my two cents about movies but to also help spread the word about Indie film makers and their productions.  I encourage you to not only watch indie movies but to get involved in making them happen.   Here is another great opportunity to help some very ambitious film makers get their movie seen.

RagNBones Productions has finished their film THE HOUSE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS or THOTWSOTT for short.  On the production company's website they have a trailer for the movie along with some production photos and a rather creative music video that ties into the movie.  Obviously the title implies some kind of inspiration from Wes Craven's LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT but after watching the trailer I think the film is more in line with Don Dohler's BLOOD MASSACRE which is a film I really need to see.  I am a big Dohler fan.  With that said it makes me think that the RagNBones people are trying to make something a little more different with their characters than the normal kids get caught by crazies movies.  It looks like a crooks vs. crazies movie and I like those.  They're are not too many of those.

Go to the RagNBones website (link below) and check out the crew bios and their upcoming projects.  We should be seeing some great stuff from these guys.  You can help.  How?  Well for starters they have an Indieagogo campaign going on.  (link below too)  Donate to help them produce DVDs and spread the word on your site or facebook.  If you live near these guys ask if they need any help.  See what happens.  Making movies is the coolest.  Click on the links below to check them out.

LORD OF TEARS KICKSTARTER UPDATE

Looks like the LORD OF TEARS KICKSTARTER is a success.  That doesn't mean you can't still contribute.  There are still a few days to go and the only way you can order a copy of the movie is by donating to the campaign.  It may be another year before there is an official distribution for the film on DVD so get to it!  The hype is growing and it looks like director Lawrie Brewster is having some fun with his Owlman character.  There is a YouTube video of Owlman freakin kids out on video chat which is really funny and something to be seen.  I can't wait to see Owlman in movie form.  There are also some pictures they have of Owlman in an abandoned hospital that help create an eerie mood to prepare you for what you are going to see in LORD OF TEARS.  The film will also be shown at the San Diego Comic Fest in October.  Exciting stuff!  Be a part of it!

SUPPORT PEELERS KICKSTARTER!!!

The director of SKEW has a Kickstarter campaign for his next film PEELERS. I think it is going to be one of those "Strippers vs. (Insert Monsters here)" kind of movies that are so popular on THE NETFLIX right now but with more attention paid to strong characters and story.  I sure hope so.  I really liked SKEW and was hoping we would get more from the director, Seve Schlenze.  Judging from the video on Kickstarter Seve and writer Lisa Devita are going to have fun with this one.  We need a good Stripper Vs. Monsters movie.  To this day none exist.

Click on the link below and spread the word about PEELERS Kickstarter.  At least watch the video for entertainment purposes.

CLICK HERE FOR PEELERS KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN!!!

Notice the random but impressive action figure collection in the background with the Hulk prominently displayed in the middle.  Why do they have action figures in the background?  Were they playing with them and then just decided to make a Kickstarter promo video?  My favorite is the alien from ALIENS.  Nice.  Seve and Lisa are going to give us a creative and horror movie crowd pleasing film that hopefully will not rely solely on the three 'B's', BLOOD BEASTS and BOOBS.  PEELERS is going to be a remarkable film and here is your chance to be a part of it.
